It's strange how the high rates of homelessness seem to correlate with astronomical rent prices- has anyone put this together? Of course San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and LA have lots of unhoused people if a minimum wage job doesn't pay enough for a one bedroom apartment.
I'm a federal proposal manager in my 30s who makes just under six figures a year. Several years ago, I bought a house and rented out a few rooms for extra income. In addition to spending all my time cleaning, looking for furniture deals, and chasing down people who had spilled wine on the rug, I worked a full time job with a 3 hour commute each day. I couldn't handle it and a few years later sold the house. I now work remotely and live the minimalist lifestyle, renting out month to month rooms wherever I feel like living. However, my situation is very unusual- I'm a high earning remote worker with no children (just a very friendly Rottweiler!) I vastly prefer my current life to my old one. But if I had children it would be completely different.
