I work in government contracting, which often issues "micro-purchase" or "small business set-aside" contracts for small and local farms to provide fresh produce. I'm in the DC area so every level of government does it, from the county school board to Congress. (Apparently our high-powered elected officials don't enjoy eating wilted lettuce that tastes like it's been sitting in a shipping container at the bottom of Baltimore Harbor for six months. Who knew?) Big Ag is ineligible for these opportunities; their bids are always LPTA (Lowest Price Technically Acceptable). VC is consumed by growth and scaling up, but realistically a business won't achieve record-breaking profit margins quarter after quarter.
