I first watched this in high school and immediately understood its message about capitalism and materialism- specifically the line, "the things you own end up owning you." As a woman, I never quite understood how this movie appealed to alt-right or incel culture, and I'm sorry to hear that it has. But as a Millennial who graduated college with an English degree in 2008, it often feels like I've spent my entire adult life watching the skyscrapers crash down around me. I'm sure others in my generation- who are also concerned by economic stagnation, political division, and climate change- feel the same way.
