I enjoyed this piece so much! My small rural Virginia county just re-elected (for the third time!) an openly trans district representative to state legislature named Danica Roem. She is absolutely fantastic- she's focused on ending childhood hunger and ensuring freedom of the press. She first ran for the position several years ago against a white male Republican seven-time incumbent who sponsored anti-trans bathroom bills and called himself "Virginia's chief homophobe." Danica campaigned on a platform of reducing traffic and raising teacher salaries. The incumbent refused to refer to Danica by female gender pronouns and encouraged members of his party to call up her staff with anti-trans insults. When her victory was announced on election night, one reporter asked her if she had anything to say to her former competitor (who had publicly harassed and mocked her.) She just smiled and said "I don't speak ill of my constituents." BOOM. Mic drop. Classiest move in the history of time!
