Allow me to share my thoughts based on my unique perspective. 16 years ago, I was an EMT in Jerusalem and South Ashkelon (5 miles from the Gaza border) with Magen David Adom. Yousef, one of my best friends since middle school, is Palestinian. And my college ex boyfriend, Lorcan, is Catholic from County Armagh in Northern Ireland. He actually had a picture of the hunger striker Bobby Sands taped to the wall of our bedroom. Sands began refusing nourishment as an inmate in Maze Prison Armagh H Block in 1981, seeking treatment from the British government as a political prisoner rather than a common criminal. It took him 66 days to die.
I'm not personally a television fan and don't know much about Ms. Nixon, but I highly doubt that people will be hanging her portrait up 30 years from now as some kind of inspirational champion. Fasting for a weekend won't change an extremely complex situation going back 3,000 years. Want to make life better for folks like Lorcan, Yousef, and I, who just want to live peacefully and raise our families? Start by calling Palestinians and Israelis to the table for a talk. The peace process will only begin through communication. Ms. Nixon has the opportunity to use her celebrity status in a positive way, but declaring a two-day water cleanse is far less effective than encouraging both sides to discuss and listen.
